Last Updated on August 5, 2022

This fried chicken in olive oil recipe is an easy one to try out – you only need to season your chicken to your liking and fry it in olive oil.

Fried chicken in olive oil is a very tasty and delicious dish to have with your family. It’s a generationally passed dish that most families still love to make in this modern day.

Fried chicken dates back to the 1700s when it was first introduced in a British cookbook. However, it was the 1900s when fried chicken became popular in the US, and this is when the first fast-food chains were started. Fried chicken in America was made with white bread and chicken fat, which was not popular among people who were health-conscious.

So fried chicken in olive oil has been around for a long time and is a healthier version of fried chicken that can be made at home. This recipe uses whole grain flour and olive oil which makes it a slightly healthier version. This dish can be made with many different types of chicken cuts, but we have chosen thighs.

Is It Safe To Cook Olive Oil at High Temperatures?

The big question that most people ask is how safe it is to cook with olive oil at high temperatures. The smoke point for extra virgin oil is around 350-410 degrees F.  It is therefore safe to cook with olive oil, even at high temperatures.

Some cooking oil does not reach high temperatures like 425 degrees F. They stay way below the smoke point. That said, research has shown you cannot choose a cooking oil based on its smoke point. Rather, you should use the oxidative stability factor, which is more important to consider.

Extra virgin oil has shown stability in cooking under heat, outperforming all the other oils with a higher smoking point. We hope you will enjoy making and eating this delicious fried chicken in olive oil recipe.

Instructions:

Step 1:  Marinate the chicken for a minimum of 2 hours

Mix all the chicken marinade ingredients together in a bowl, including the chicken. Once mixed, place in the fridge for 2-6 hours.

Remove from the fridge at least 30 mins before cooking, so the chicken is not cold when cooking.

Step 2: Make the flour and batter

Mix all the ingredients for the flour coating into a large, shallow dish. Make the batter by whisking all batter ingredients together in a separate bowl. Dredge the marinated chicken pieces in the flour and dust off the excess. Once coated in flour, place into the batter mix until coated well.

Step 3: Fry the chicken

Place a heavy, medium-sized pan over a medium heat to heat up the extra virgin olive oil. Heat it up for at least 10 minutes. When ready, a wooden chopstick inserted into the oil should shows lots of bubbles.

Once the oil becomes hot, dip the already coated chicken pieces into the oil and allow them to cook. Regulate the heat accordingly to avoid burning them before they cook inside.

Do not overcrowd the pan with too many chicken pieces; allow enough oil to circulate each chicken piece.

Cook the wings for around 12 minutes, drumsticks for around 18 minutes, or thighs for around 20 minutes. Remember to turn them in every few minutes, so it’s evenly cooked.

Tips To Make Your Fried Chicken in Olive Oil Crunchy

  • Ensure the oil is hot before you begin frying the chicken.
  • Allow the chicken to marinade in the fridge before cooking; the longer, the better.
  • Remove the marinated chicken from the fridge to allow it to get back to room temperature before cooking; this helps the chicken to cook evenly.
  • Do not pre-batter the chicken too early before the oil is ready, do so just before you fry.
  • Remove the chicken and place it on a rack or napkin to drain excess oil before serving. This prevents the chicken from becoming soggy and greasy.
  • You can substitute extra virgin olive oil with canola oil, sunflower oil, or peanut oil. However, all these will alter the flavor of your chicken. Plate and serve!

What is the best oil to fry fried chicken?

Chicken breasts or drumsticks are the best chicken parts to fry since they have more meat and will crisp up well when coated.
